Evaluation - Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop and challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

My media project uses common thriller tropes in order to be recognised as a thriller opening, for example, I used a lot of close up shots like those seen in “Dexter” in order to express intense emotions, create mystery and suggests actions. I also used common thriller stereotypes such as a  character who speaks Russian in order to suggest that the character is a villain as Russian’s are a common movie villain in action-thrillers.
However, I pushed these conventions in order to make my opening standout, for example I intended the protagonist to be a black female and when it was rewritten I made the female character the more dominant character which is not seen in many thrillers as females are normally portrayed as submissive/ vulnerable. In thrillers the audience normally see females as needing to be protected. By making the female a villainous character I challenged this trope and made a more interesting character.
My Location's also conforms to tropes usually seen in thrillers because I used dark and empty environments usually seen these types of films. Although filming in a park during the day is quite uncommon as thrillers normally film in such places during the night in order to add mystery to the environment. I chose these locations based on mood, tone and also availability.  I made sure when I filmed in these locations it would work well thrillers.
.

The Mise en scene in my thriller opening lends itself more to action films because of my use of weapons such as baseball bats and guns. However by including things like the mysterious removal of a sim card showing mysterious locations and characters I was able to make the opening more like a thriller.
